Will access control cards be replaced with smartphones?

In the past few years a number of vendors have released systems which allow you to use the smartphone as an access control card. These systems usually use an app to store one or more virtual cards.

These systems usually come with a server (or cloud based service) that is used for admin purposes. And they come with multi-technology readers that usually integrate with 3rd party access control systems.

Some people predict that this may the end of the traditional access badge, Cards will be virtualized. Let’s dive into that discussion a little deeper.
